...

Why is it that the only ship I actually ship in Game of Thrones, got all of one fanfic? Seriously, how can I be one of like two people who ship 'em?

I wish I could write fanfics, then at least I could write for the pairing myself

So...

What's the pairing?

(Don't tell me if naming it would be a spoiler for after book 2. I'm partway through book 3.)

That's...huh. That one never would have occurred to me.

I've only seen one episode of the show. I wish I could see it somehow without having to go through HBO because I'm poor =(

...embed fail :?

and man I really do not have the money for DVDs right now =/ and I'd rather get into a fandom by trying out the source material first, then deciding if it's worth spending money on. I feel like this ties into GRRM's attitude towards his work but I'm not sure if he had any control over HBO's exclusivity (though I guess he *did* choose to let HBO run the show...)

GoT is really, really hard to find online. I've looked. =| HBO does a pretty thorough job of making sure nobody can access it.

The library may be a good idea, but would they get it so soon? idk

I'm confused? How can I download the episodes if I can't find them?

Hopefully you're right about the library! I'll have to look this summer to see if I can find them at my local library at home.

thanks!

No, it's just that I could never find it (at least without having to do a big survey or shit and I never trust sites like that).

I'll watch some soon!

Lol, the other day I've read an interesting entry by Mr. Martin in which he explains why he is strictly against fanfics and why he doesn't allow people to use his characters (or rather "children") for that kind of purpose. I didn't like what arguments he came up with. This actually made me a bit upset, that's why I stopped reading the first book for the time being.

Anyway, it's a free world and nobody can prevent me from slashing, it happens automatically. But I haven't made up my mind yet as to whom I want to slash with whom exactly. Lol I have a thing for Jon Snow, and I like Tyrion and Jorah Mormont. Well, I can't decide whether these would make a good slash pairing for me.

GRRM's hate!boner for fanfic really annoys me. You'd think he'd be honored that people love his characters enough to want to work with them strictly for fun. It comes across as really arrogant to me.

Yes, arrogant is what I was thinking, too. And kind of money-grubbing, for I had the feeling all he wanted was for people to actually ask for his permission if they wanted to use his characters, and, most importantly, he wanted to get payed for it. Just like he gets payed for some RPG's (sorry, I'm not familiar with this).

I actually read a lot of the comments people left on his entry, and what I was reading there made me really upset, sometimes. I don't get what's so bad about fanfics. Hell, if it weren't for fanfics I would never have bought the books in the first place. In fact, it was a slash fanfic that introduced me to GRRM's works. Tse.

lol, I love the irony.

If it's money-grubbing then that's kind of dumb. He's getting paid for a lot of things, and people who have really successful book series tent to make a lot of money from the franchise, and not just from selling the books themselves. And who gets paid to write fanfiction? Nobody. That's the point of fanfiction, it's just for FUN.

If I wrote a book series I'd be over the moon if people liked it and my characters enough to want to write fic for it. I'd also be fascinated to see what people came up with.

That's exactly what he doesn't get. He thinks people who use his characters and write fanfictions should rather use their creativity and talent and invent their own characters. This issues from the thought that one is only "lazy" when s/he uses characters/settings someone else has racked their brains about. Again, apparently he doesn't get that people who write fanfics do not want to invent their own characters because they just love what he has come up with and want to play with his characters.

Based on his comments, I think he is convinced that you either should write your own original fiction or you should pay him and ask for his permission when you want to write fanfic about his characters.

I think this is, excuse me, bullshit. The moment he publishes his books his characters, his world etc. will be explored by his readers. He can't stop them to pair up his characters as they see fit or imagine different plot threads or what else it is they want to do. So what if they share their work with other people completely for free, just for the fun? It's not that bad. As I said in my previous comment. I discovered his books through fandom. If it weren't for fanfics I wouldn't have bought a lot of things in the first place. He should be lucky fanfics spread the love. In some way it's advertisement for free.

Yeah. Not everyone wants to make their own OCs. Not everyone finds that fun. Fanfiction is just one way to enjoy and celebrate a canon you love. Also I TOTALLY agree about fanfiction being free advertisement. In fact fandom as a whole is really good for media; it spreads it around and it's the way a lot of people get into new things. It would ultimately benefit GRRM to be more permissive about fanfiction, but I think he's too proud to even consider it. Sad day.
